Race is a concept which classifies human beings according to broad physical characteristics such as skin color. Many people assert that race is more than physical and claim that different races have different psychological, intellectual, and religious characteristics.

Various different classifications have been proposed for human races in the past. Evolutionary textbooks used to have a chapter on eugenics that discussed various “races”, such as ******* (mostly Africans), Mongoloid (mostly Asian) and Caucasian (mostly Europeans) and which of the races were the furthest along in evolution. For example, George William Hunter wrote, “At the present time, there exists upon the Earth five races or varieties of man, each very different from the other in instincts, social customs, and, to an extent, in structure. These are the Ethiopian or ***** type, originating in Africa; the Malay or brown race, from the islands of the Pacific; the American Indian; the Mongolian or yellow race, including the natives of China, Japan, and the Eskimos, and finally the highest type of all, the Caucasians, represented by the civilized white inhabitants of Europe and America” (196).

The concept of race is no longer considered scientifically valid, as there is little genetic difference between the so-called races, and those differences are mostly superficial. Distinguishing humans on the basis of minor differences are not on the original basis of the theory; humans are either one race or several thousand. The most obvious example of difference between races is the fact that while yellow, olive, Japanese, and Nepali people are, obviously, Asian, all people have the same type of skin-coloring pigment (melanin), with each race’s skin color being dependent on the melanin content of the skin.

Despite its questionable validity, mostly for convenience in classifying individuals into groups, race is still detailed in government census and other forms (e.g., university application and business resume).

According to Doctor Bindon, in a study done in 1999, seventy-five percent of anthropologists disagreed with the statement, “There are biological races in the species Homo sapiens” amongst cultural anthropologists (eighty percent disagreed) and physical anthropologists (sixty-nine percent disagreed). Only twenty-five percent of anthropologists agreed with that statement, twenty-percent from cultural anthropologists and thirty-one percent from physical anthropologists.

The belief that one race is inherently better or worse than others is known as racism. For historical accuracy, it is worth noting that until the events of the 1960s, holders of racist beliefs were termed “racialists” rather than the modern term, “racists”.

Today, human geographers prefer to discuss people in terms of ethnicities rather than races; the principal difference between one’s ethnicity and one’s race is that race is superficial while ethnicity carries with it a whole host of cultural traditions. For example, Koreans have cultural traditions that are distinct from the Japanese, though both ethnic groups would be racially considered mongoloid.

As geography author Olivier Vonk defined it, nationality is the legal relationship between an individual human and a Nation state (19). Nationality normally confers some protection of the individual by the state, and some obligations on the individual towards the state. What these rights and duties are vary from one country to another (Weis 29-61). It differs technically and legally from citizenship, although in most modern countries all nationals are citizens of the state, and all citizens are nationals of the state.

Maikang Somebody stated ‘German and Italian’. This could be seen as biracial, since Italians are mediterranean (dark hair, dark eyes, different bone structure) and Germans are Germanic/Nordic Japanese and Chinese do not have their own ‘subraces’. I see a lot of people say that “Chinese and Japanese are TOTALLY different” – this is not true. If they were totally different, how come people mistake them? (if a chinese and japanese person had the same clothes, same hair, etc – you probably couldnt even tell) like you cant mistake a German with an Italian – you can see the OBVIOUS features which distinguish them. Japanese and Chinese generally have smallish eyes, yellowish skin, short stature, high IQ’s, high/broad cheekbones (compared to Whites) So in short – NO. Japanese is not a race. Chinese is not a race. They come under the Asian/Mongoloid race (which dont have sub-races, unlike Europeans eg Alpine, Anglo-Saxon, Nordic, Mediterranean, Slavic, Celtic etc etc). This is more of a realistic example: if a Portuguese guy and Spanish girl have a baby – would the offspring be considered “multi-racial”? absoultely not! Koreans tend to be tall and light skinned + tall nose and have bag of fat under their eyes. (look up ‘aegyo sal’) Japanese tend to be shorter, yellowish skin+ tall nose. South Chinese look more like Japanese. North Chinese look more like Koreans. The reason for the confusion is that the media portrays Chinese people TOTALLY different from Japanese; therefore people begin to think that the two are seperate races altogether! Its just like saying the Russians are not White, because they are considered ‘evil’ by UK and USA. (China is not the same as Japanese, its considered ‘evil’ by Japan, USA etc)skin analyzer

Maikang National Identity and also a cultural identity. I’m Chinese American and don’t really see myself identified with the Nation of China. But because both my parents are of Chinese heritage and had my family had long left China since the Communist Cultural revolution… I don’t really Identify with Communism. Though I still practice traditions taught to me from my parents, I still eat cultural foods that I grew up with… so culturally Identify my self as Chinese.skin analyzer

I think you’re getting caught up with semantics. In the English language, the word “Chinese” can denote the Han race or Chinese nationality. The English language uses the same word for both.

This confusion doesn’t exist in Chinese. In Chinese (I’ll use Mandarin as the standard), the ethnic Chinese are known as Han or Hua and a Chinese national is Zhongguoren (pronounced “Chongkuoren”).
