He kept licking at it, so I finally took him to the vet. I thought it might be the beginnings of mange, but the vet said it didn’t look like it. The spot was red and puffy and had sores on it. The vet said it looked like something was irritating it and gave him a steroid shot and antibiotics. It has been about a week or so since that and the area is still red and he still licks at it sometimes, but it’s not puffy anymore. I’m worried because just recently he has started scratching himself everywhere and can’t seem to stop. He doesn’t have fleas, so what else could it be? Are the spot and the all over itching related?

Maikang If you don’t feel comfortable with your vet by all means find a new one. Also, if you are sure that it is something more, then you should get a second opinion. Also, it might not be the same thing but my mom has a chihuahua that has bad skin allergies and also out door allergies. I am not sure if it could just be a chihuahua thing or what but my mom was also given an antibiotic and antihistamine for her dog in the past. If time has passes and you have been giving him the medicine as directed and it doesn’t seem to be working, you should not hesitate to call the vet back or make an appointment with a new one.skin analyzer

Maikang The disposition of mange is seen up the legs & on the face first, not on the belly between the legs. I wonder how the vet would scrape that if it’s on the dogs underside?
I’ve seen this on dogs with poor diet & nutrition. I’d upgrade your dog food. If it were me I’d look into a preservative free, chemical free, wheat free, soy free, corn free diet. I’d supplement too, especially if you are feeding a commercial made dog food. Because of the anti-biotic, you’ll have to do pro-biotics and because of the steroid, you’ll have to re-allign the T1 & T2s, but that’s all part of supplementing. If the area is such that the dog likes to scratch it … a little gold bond powder sometimes helps reduce inflamation and redness, but it won’t solve the problem other than the dog might not scratch. So, basically, what you are feeding your dog is NOT working and there are things you can give to counter side effects of the anti-biotics & steroid shot.skin analyzer

Maikang Poor Little Guy! The first thing I would do, is to give the vet you took him to a call, {there is no charge}, and explain to him what is going on and that he just started scratching everywhere! He could be having a reaction to either the Steroid Shot or The Antibiotics he’s taking. {Just a thought}! Maybe he can prescribe a different medication, that is more effective in treating the sores and that will not cause him an allergic reaction to it! I hope he feels better soon! Maikang Maybe your pup has dry skin. Frequent baths and winter heat can quickly dry out dog’s skin. First, make sure you are rinsing off all soap or shampoo when bathing. After bathing, put a small amount of baby oil in your palms and rub together. Then massage this oil over your dog’s damp fur and skin. Then just towel dry. Maikang If you didn’t like the vet, go to another. But you have to go back to A vet with this and tell them there’s still a problem, because obviously we can’t offer advice over the internet. Plus we’re not vets, and haven’t seen the dog.

Maikang if it has a funny smell (kind of like dirty feet) it could be a yeast infection…..one way to relieve it (if it is that) is to give him a bath using shampoo that has some sulfur base in it (should be able to find at petsmart) and rinse him with baking soda mix (couple table spoons baking soda/gallon warm water…be sure to dissolve completely ) pour mix over him and do not rinse. either way, doing this won’t hurt him- but if he does have a yeast infection it will certainly offer him some relief.
