Out of almost everyone in my 100% Vietnamese family, I’m the ONLY one with single eyelids. I got this trait from my dad, who was also the only person in his family to have single eyelids. Everyone else has double eyelids, even my twin sister.

So I’m wondering–are double eyelids dominant or recessive? If they are dominant, then how did my dad and I end up being the only ones in the family with single eyelids? Is there some kind of genetic stuff going on that makes this so?

Maikang I realize this is 5 years ago, but in case you were still curious…

Having double eyelids (as far as I know) is a phenotype dictated by a dominant allele. If everyone but you have double eyelids, I would say that at least one of your dad’s parents (your grandparents) are heterozygous, or they have one allele that codes for the double eyelid trait and one that does not. Since the double eyelid allele is recessive, it would only show up if you have 2 recessive alleles.
If you then do a Punnett square and cross your grandparents’ expected genotypes, you will find that there is a smaller chance of getting 2 recessive alleles, or having no double eyelids. That may be the reason why your dad was the only one out of his siblings (if he had any) that doesn’t have double eyelids.
Fast forward to when you and your sibling(s) were born. If you mom has double eyelids, which I am assuming that she does since you said everyone but your father and you had the trait, then she would be a heterozygous, have one dominant and one recessive allele, because you would have needed a recessive allele from both your father and mother, to make you have no double eyelids.
Also, your twin’s DNA and your own are not the same just because you guys are twins. There’s a whole lot on how twins are born that you could look up in the internet, but you didn’t ask that so I won’t go rambling on about that. Basically, every child that your parents bear will have a chance of having double eyelids, and not having them. In actuality, if you cross your parents’ genotypes in a Punnett Square, you’ll find that you had a 50/50 chance of getting double eyelids.
Another thing, your ethnicity does not matter for this trait, or most any at all. You just have similar traits due to living and having children with the people in a certain region which make certain traits show up more often, and other less often.
