Statistically the following applies: Atheists have proven to have a significantly lower crime rate, a significantly lower divorce rate, and are accepting of all people including religion, sexual orientation and skin color. This is very different from my religious following which appears partially uneasy when around blacks, homosexuals, and those who follow a different path in life. They often times push the religion in other peoples faces, which is particularly demeaning, and is the most significant reason why I am interested in leaving.

Logically the following applies: Atheists are not concerned about the existence of God, nor do they bother to rely upon the actions of God for their prosperity or interactions with others. Atheists are open to discussions regarding views which conflict with their own, however my religion tends to automatically disregard any intellectual opposition, this makes me feel intellectually suppressed by my own religion. Maikang Whether or not atheism is appealing and would be a better alternative choice than your current situation, depends totally upon what questions in your life you need to have answered. Obviously, if you need to understand, for instance, who God is, then it would be better to go with something affirming the existence of God. Contrary to your post, however, is that atheist’s are deeply concerned about the existence of God, and some atheist, in the true, original sense of the word, are only against the theistic formulation of God–almost exclusively! They seem to have no problem with Pantheism. Actually, the most famous atheists of all time are generally those who have written rather extensively on the subject of God, such as Russell or Gould. Just remember one thing when analyzing a religions ‘veracity’ or truthfulness; judge it according to its representative and authoritative feature. If you are going to judge the Christian faith, judge the faith and not the apparent proponents–they are only proponents because they claim to represent what it teaches. They may not be good representations. If so, however, remember that the real thing is not judged according to the representation, but the reality. So, you ought to critic the Bible itself first; if it teaches nonsense, then, of course, the proponents will be mad as well!skin analyzer

Let’s define exactly what religion is. Religion is a bunch of people, lead by a heirarch of some sort, who worship whatever spiritual entity they believe exists. Religion is often accompanied by some sort of mythological “rule book” (the Bible, Torah, Qu’ran, etc). And if you do not follow this rule book, you are punished in some way.

So through this fear, the heirarch controls the people and tells them how to behave. However, the heirarch also has a living to make. So, what do you get when you put money and power together?

You get the Inquisition. You get hate crimes against the Jews, black people, gay people, and women. You get genocide in Africa. You get the wars in the Middle East that are seemingly without resolution.

Why?

Because the more fear the heirarch puts in you, the more likely you are to listen – and give them money.

And when you are full of fear, you will do anything to protect yourself. It’s like a Cold War of the mind – constantly checking under the bed, thinking that something is going to come in the night and destroy you.

This is why religion perpetuates hate and crime. Because the people who belong to it are driven to insanity by fear.

Now we come to atheism.

Atheism is not a belief system of any sort. And certainly, it is possible for an atheist to be brainwashed in a similar fashion to a religious person (think Communist China, or the Manson Family, for example).

But an atheist is free of the societal insanity that religion has caused. And I have lived in countries which are atheist (BY CHOICE, not through fear, such as Communist China).

I was born in America, and I sat by my best friend in the hospital after he was beaten to a pulp by Christians for being gay. I watched the World Trade Center fall because of Islamic suicide bombers.

A couple years ago I moved to Western Europe, which is mostly atheist or agnostic. I saw no such tyranny. I saw more equality. I saw lower crime. I saw better education.

On a quality of life scale, America and Europe are not that different. In fact, the only place where they are SIGNIFICANTLY different is that America is religious, and Europe is not.

Maikang If you started from Christianity, you know that there is a biblical dogma that says we must each make a personal relationship with God. The same would be true with atheism. It is a personal decision to believe whatever you are going to believe. No one can believe it for you. Therefore, my thought is that I am going to back off and let you think.skin analyzer

I never really understood how someone could possibly believe the earth was 4,000 years old anyway, given the fact that hundreds upon thousands of pre-historic bones have been dug up and carbon-dated to being millions of years old.

I have often thought about this, probably every time I visit R&S because I keep finding these “sermonettes” posing as questions where the author tries so very very hard to prove the intellectual superiority of the supposedly “logically superior” (which, of course, is applied to the atheist constituency)……..and invariably claims superior “nondiscriminatory” traits and all sorts of things which make them SUPERIOR and others INFERIOR. Sound familiar? Ever hear that before?
