I have a rescued/starvation case 8 month old who has been seen by the vet, had several courses of antibiotics, several dewormskin analyzer software downloadings and is still intensely itchy! I thought it was just pin worms, he rubs his butt most of all. But he is still itchy all over! Now he’s rubbing his muzzle so much that he is rubbing the hair off! The vet did a skin and hair analyzer and found nothing, so the vet has been no help. I don’t know what else to do or why he is still so itchy. Could it be his extremely long winter coat combined with the fact that he has dry skin due to having Absolutely no fat in his diet most of his life, combined with the pin worms? I just don’t know what to do for him.

Maikang This horse may have a desperate need for a bath. When you give this horse a bath its important that you use a hydration shampoo in this case. And if you give baths a lot, then it can cause the horse to be itchy and maybe your just not getting all the soap out. You could also groom your horse very well with the curry comb and Dandy brush to get rid of the dead skin and loosen up the shedding hair. My horse had the problem where he would itch his butt and his tail. My trainer told me to put listerine( mouthwash) in their tail and add a bit of water. I know this sounds stupid but It really helped!skin analyzer
Maikang I had a 26 yr old mare who I’d gotten back in a severely run down condition back in ’71. As we started feeding her back up, she also started in with the itchiness and such. This is what we came up with and cured her with:
They also call it “sarcoptic mange”, “Spanish Itch”, “sweet itch”, lice etc.
Well if you’re willing to try anything, here’s a decades old remedy for it… Motor oil (New or used). Simply paint your horse/pony with it and it will kill the fungus/bugs. Leave it on at least a month and within 2 weeks of painting it on, you’ll see new hair growing in hairless spots. What happens is, that it coats their little bug bodies and because bugs breathe through their skin, suffocates them…
I should state that you SHOULD either WASH your horse/pony with dawn or something else that will take the oil off IF you HAVE to ride before you put any tack on it. IF you don’t you WILL stain your tack and boots (I actually heard somebody did ride with it on their horse and it stained all their tack and their black boots turned brown)… Thought that would be a no brainer.skin analyzer
Maikang It will definitely be an allergy as pollen/ other substances can create some strange symptoms. Otherwise it will be a parasite i.e lice/fleas etc…. I would imagine the vet has looked into this prognosis already though if he’s a good vet. Did he check to make sure it wasn’t sarcoptic mange as this can go undetected. I still think its an allergy otherwise he maybe just showing signs of repetitive behaviour although not sure though.skin analyzer
Maikang First i just want to say you are a great person to rescue horses–thank you and you will make a difference in the lives of these once not-loved horses!
he may be sweating under the long coat and when the sweat sits there it gets painfully itchy… i suggest that you body clip him and just put on blankets instead…
i hope i’ve helped—after he stopes itching you can help him grow the hair back with MTG (AWSOME!)
good luck!skin analyzer
Maikang it sounds like your horse has sweet ich, even though i don’t have a horse, a couple up the road from where i live has a pony that has severe sweet ich. there’s nothing ot worry about all you need to do is go out to the shops and buy a spray like NAFF OFF, and apply it every Morning and evening. if this doesn’t seem to be working you might wanna go and invest in a fly rug with a flap for the tail to be covered and a hood that goes over the neck.but if you don’t have the money to be able to buy these things put him in a stable, it usually happens if the field is near a stream and its in summer that it shows.
tell us how you get on:)

Maikang Sweet itch is probably the cause u need to get some calomine lotion or something similar, anything designed to sooth the skin of people will work, but there is no cure for it and will be worse in the summerskin analyzer
Maikang the others have given you great advice so far, but i wanted to add one thing: black oil sunflower seeds!
don’t laugh, they are GREAT for improving a horses skin and haircoat. add 1 cup of the black oil sunflower seeds to each meal. just pour them into his grain. make sure they are the black oil ones, not the regular striped ones.
you will see a marked improvement fairly quickly.skin analyzer
Maikang Try consulting another vet; its frustrating that yours was unable to come up with anything! Also, try adding fat pellets to his regular grain. I did this with an itchy mare who was losing fur (and was underweight) and it really helped her.skin analyzer
Maikang try a coal tar shampoo it may helpskin analyzer
